Something we’re constantly talking about here at ifixyouri.com are iPhone replacement parts – what we need to stock up on, what we need to plan for, etc. And while we were talking about it, we thought: “You know, I bet iPhone owners are curious about that too.” No? Sure you are.
So, with that, we decided to make a list of the top 5 iPhone parts that most often need to be replaced – whether it’s due to them breaking, sticking, or just not working. As a bonus, we’ll mention some care tips, so that hopefully you won’t have to repair your iPhone sooner than necessary.
1) iPhone Screen
The iPhone screen is more breakable than Apple lets on. Whether it’s the iPhone 3g, the iPhone 3gs, or the iPhone 4, these things just break like mad. Don’t believe us? Check out some of our videos [link]. And if they’re not breaking, scratched iPhone screens pose a problem for users as well.
The second problem is the easiest to address. Try cleaning it with a microfiber cloth, and water only (don’t worry about water damage if you’re just cleaning the screen, unless you drop the iPhone in water [link]). As for protecting your iPhone screen from breaking, try using a case with minor drop protection.
2) Battery
Batteries in most mobile devices have understandably short shelf-lives, and the iPhone is no exception. It has been our experience that the iPhone battery can potentially degrade very quickly after 9 to 12 months, when it will stop holding a charge. This seems to be the case for iPhone 3G, 3Gs, and 4s. One thing you can do to relieve the drain on iPhones is to reduce the features running, like WiFi or searching for new data when not necessary. This can cut down on the time you need to charge the phone.
3) Home Button
After around 9 months, you start having to click repeatedly to get them working. Once this starts, failure is only amount of time. Most people begin pressing down on the home button even harder to get it working, which only breaks the connection down even faster. Tip: press lightly.
4) Dock
Docks can be problematic, as they often get moisture in them and they stop charging properly. Docks control the home button feature and this part of the dock stops working properly. Microphone is also housed in the dock, which also tends to stop working. Dust and dirt can be a problem with the dock connector as well. Cleaning it with a compressed-gas duster is usually sufficient, but in some cases dock connector repair is necessary to restore functionality.
5) Power Button
Not so much on the iPhone 4, but the power button on the iPhone 3g and the iPhone 3gs are very problematic. In the 3g/3gs the power button flex cable controls the vibrate and volume controls as well. These features begin to become faulty over time. If you find that your iPhone power button working, you may need to replace it. As with the home button, press the power button as lightly as you can to maintain functional longevity.
