iPhone Screen Repair Additions!

Our iPhone screen repair and replacement services have been good to us. One problem we have though is people often times don’t know what exactly is wrong with their iPhone screens. There is no standard answer because the screen repair service needed depends on what model you own, which as of now is the 3G, 3Gs and iPhone 4.  We have added a section specifically for  iPhone screen repair  to help alleviate confusion. Here is the breakdown:

We use high quality replacement part for our iPhone 3G screen repair services. As the newly minted addage goes, “just because you break your iPhone 3G screen, it does not mean you have damaged the LCD.” In the world of ‘addages’ that one lacks luster but it’s true and can be a big money saver when looking at a repair. If the glass is cracked or shattered but the LCD works, thank your replacement options just got much cheaper.

The same holds true for iPhone 3Gs screen repair in that the LCD and glass are not glued together. High quality iPhone parts are again used and if it is just glass damage, the repair can be done in 15 minutes.  Something to think about if you think you can handle repairs, we have DIY kits to help every step of the way.

Finally, iPhone 4 screen repair is a bit more difficult and more expensive overall. This is because the screen and the LCD display are glued together. When you have to buy the screen and LCD the cost rises. The process of DIY repair is also more difficult overall but experience and know how may dictate different views on that.

No matter what type of iPhone repair service you need, we can likely cover it. Our percentages in regards to successful repairs is over 90% and the is especially true with screen repairs. Let us know your problem and we will provide a solution.

iPhone 3G Screen Glass Breakdown

The iPhone 3G screen is made of glass and protection is typically a good start when using the product. It is optical quality glass, which sits under the frame to offer it some protection but if dropped on a hard surface such as concrete, it could easily shatter or crack. Because of the vulnerable screen an iPhone 3G repair is one of our most popular repair services.

When you feel the glass it seems pretty hard. Overall the 3G glass screen is hard but still susceptible to scratching from every day wear and tear. An old myth that existed when the iPhone 3G was released was that the new glass would not scratch anymore, compared to it’s plastic counterpart. While it may not scratch as easily, don’t expect perfection. Think of it this way: the windshield on your car is made from glass that is very strong and durable. If you own the car a few years though, you may notice the windshield wipers causing tiny scratches. If somebody throws a brick at the glass windshield it will likely break. The iPhone 3G is the same way but it does not take a brick, just a fall out of your lap when you are getting out of the car can be enough to shatter the screen.

Invisible Screen protectors and plastic covers can help with both with both scratching and shattering of glass. As many of our in-house tests have proved though, they may not protect everything behind the screen, such as the LCD digitizer display. Th screen may often freeze (whit freeze) which can be a result of LCD damage.

The multi-touch touchscreen for the iPhone 3G was still new and exciting when it was released clear back in July  2008.  The back is made of plastic, which is different than the aluminum back of the original iPhone and the glass back of the iPhone 4.

The biggest different between the iPhone 3G screen and other models (besides the 3Gs) is the fact that the glass is not glued to the LCD display. This is great if the glass breaks, because a DIY repair can be accomplished for about $30. If the LCD goes out too, the replacement LCD parts for a DIY repair can be expensive. The difficulty changes too as a screen repair can be simple (relative to your experience) if you know what you are doing. The problem with the 3G screen being separated from the LCD is that dirt and dust can get in front of the display and behind the glass.

Some people don’t like the 3G glass because it can give off a yellowish tent and be hard to see when not looking at it at the right angle. Some iPhone 3G users have complained that the numbers and letters can seem blurred out with some phones. Others say it’s a grayish dull affect that makes the over experience less enjoyable and productive.

Overall, at the time of the release the iPhone 3G was awesome and the screen, even with some of the complaints, was an advancement over past models. If you are experiencing any of the issues discussed above and an iPhone repair or free diagnostics is needed, do not hesitate to call for help.

iPhone 3G/3Gs Screen Repair and Replacement Parts

If you’re unsure of what iPhone screen repair you’re in need of, don’t feel like you’re the only one. It is easy to lump iPhone 3G  and 3Gs together because as the name suggests, the 3Gs is an upgrade from its predecessor, not deserving of a more unique title.  This helps the overall process of fixing these phones similar in many ways, although before any repair do your research so you know what your are getting into. Basically, don’t read about how to fix a 3G if you own a 3Gs.  One way in which these phones have something in common is screen repair. While the parts are not the same necessarily, the process in which one performs a DIY repair is very similar.

One main nuance is the fact that the the glass screen and LCD digitizer display are not glued together. In the iPhone 3G repair world this is a big difference to the original model and the new iPhone 4 that is stuck together to avoid dust in the display.

As our much overlooked 3G and 3Gs tests showed, even with protective covers the iPhone can be in danger of LCD display issues even when the glass does not shatter or get cracked. Sometimes the iPhone 3G screen is cracked but the LCD behind it is fine. Screen display issues varies in price depending on the exact need, which often times comes down to if the glass and/or LCD is broken.

An iPhone 3Gs repair is much the same story, as broken glass can be an easier type of DIY repair but LCD damage can be much more difficult. Overall, fixing a 3G iPhone will cost a little more than the 3G.

iPhone 4 Repair video of drop tested iPhone w/ bumper

We have detailed closely our ability to break the iPhone 4 on concrete, with a protective bumper and without. You can check out our video section for all of our film sessions. The bumper does not seem to make much of a difference in protecting from glass damage. When the iPhone 4 screen breaks, the LCD behind it is also ruined. This raises the overall cost of iPhone parts needed and make the DIY iPhone 4 repair process much more difficult. Lucky for those who break an iPhone, the techs at iFixyouri.com have seen it all and repair almost everything.

The video below is our demonstration on how to fix the iPhone 4 yourself. Before any DIY repair you need to make sure you have the correct tools and parts needed for successful repair.

After doing the iPhone 4 drop test, we decided to make yet another video of us fixing the poor poor iPhone 4. Sit back and enjoy!

Parts Needed for DIY iPhone 4 screen repair:

Glass Kit

Repair tools needed:

Precision Screwdriver
Plastic Spudger

Remember: STAY GROUNDED – Be sure you are electrostatic discharge(ESD) safe. We always use static mats w/ a wrist strap to be sure we’re properly grounded!

iPhone 4 Screen Damage bumper test

We have heard a lot of talk about the iPhone 4 bumper helping with reception problems but now we test it to see if it can prevent glass and LCD damage. The results are not good for iPhone 4 owners who just got a protective bumper, as the 3rd drop on concrete resulted in a shattered screen. The iPhone 4 repair team is on standby to answer any questions and as you see in the video below, for good reason.

Going back to our first test, it was noted that the i4 glass sit on top of the frame, rather than inset like the 3g and 3gs. This fact, along with glass on both sides of the iPhone 4, makes broken glass on the i4 a common reality. The protective bumper is the same bumper that is supposed to help with the much publicized iPhone 4 antenna.

We’ve have known for a little while now that iPhone 4 bumpers do not offer all of the protection needed because customers have called in an told us.  Although it does not take a video by iFixyouri to inform you that dropping your new iPhone 4 on concrete is a bad idea, hopefully this video squashed any doubts as to the bumpers effectiveness.  A DIY fix for any type of cracked glass on an i4 screen can be difficult.

Other Tests

We have now performed three tests on the iPhone 4. The first was with the parts (frame, glass) but not the guts. The next one was with a new iPhone 4. The latest was with an iPhone 4 with the bumper. In comparing the 3 tests, we can’t find much of a difference.  What really matters is how you drop it. If it hits on a corner you may get out of trouble completely, or with just a scuff mark. If it drops on the glass though, on top of concrete, you could be in serious trouble. This scenario is very likely every time you get out of your car.

We also performed an iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G test with protective cases and instead of the glass breaking, there was LCD damage on the fifth and sixth drop, respectively.

Our iPhone repair technicians are trained to help both repair broken iPhones and help those looking for DIY repair solutions. Let us know if you have any questions, as it is our goal to provide customers with the best decisions possible.  Often times we get calls from customers who have ordered a wrong iPhone parts or made a broken iPhone worse.  Don’t let it happen to you and call now!

iPhone 3Gs Screen LCD Damage Drop Test with Case

Our test of the iPhone 3Gs showed similar results as the 3G test, as the glass held up but the LCD was damaged after 6 drops even with a protective case.  This helps explain why iPhone 3Gs repair is so popular because even with protection the 3Gs was not a fan of concrete. The glass holds up nicely and that is a good thing. In the world of a DIY iPhone 3Gs fix, LCD repair is a high degree of difficulty. Sometimes a cracked screen of a 3Gs is easier and more cost effective to fix.

We can’t say this test proves a protective case is not worth the investment. It is better if it breaks on the sixth fall as opposed to the third. But this shows that even with precautionary measures taken, your iPhone 3Gs is at risk. Our repair technicians have seen countless numbers of broken 3Gs iPhones and some of them used protective cases so the results come as no great surprise.

Similar Tests

As you see with the blogs posted directly before and after this one, the 3G and iPhone 4 were also put to the test.  The iPhone 3G was dropped 5 times before the LCD was due for a repair. The iPhone 4 screen bumper test resulted in shattered glass. This shows that no matter what model iPhone you bought, it is best that you handle with care.

What do you thing of our iPhone 3G screen test. Does it make you want to buy a protective case?

iPhone 3G Screen Damage Drop Test with Case

We decided to drop the iPhone 3G to test the damage to the glass screen and LCD, which our common causes for repair even with protective cases like we use here. An iPhone 3G repair is one of our most common fixes, LCD screen replacement services just about topping the list.

As you see in the video below, it took 5 drops to insure that the LCD was dead. Things were not looking to good early and after the 4th drop LCD failure seemed inevitable. The glass did not shatter, surprisingly enough. The case probably absorbed the impact when hitting the ground. If it weren’t for the case, this drop would have almost been a glass and LCD repair.

When looking at DIY repair for the iPhone 3G, the LCD display can be difficult to those unfamiliar with fixes of this nature. As this test demonstrates, just because the screen does not break does not mean there is not LCD damage, and vice versa.

Comparative Tests

In addition to this iPhone 3G drop test, we performed an iPhone 3Gs break test with a protective cover and it produced similar results (6 drops LCD damage). Our iPhone 4 bumper drop test resulted in broken glass and with the i4 this means the LCD will need replaced as well. The new design glues the LCD and glass together.

How do you think the iPhone 3G performs with a protective case?

iPhone 3G Repair – Fix or recycle?

The iPhone took a giant leap when it made the leap from working on the old EDGE network to the 3G network. Streaming videos from your cell phone, fast picture messaging, and quick internet access exploded on the smartphone scene transitioning everyone to a mobile, fully portable tech world.

Being well into the whole iPhone 3G repair scene with generations of past 3G collecting dust, you may be questioning what exactly to do with that ‘ancient’ 1-year-old iPhone sitting in your desk drawer. Is it worth anything? If it’s broken, should you just chuck it? Or perhaps you may think about keeping it so you have a backup phone, should your near and dear iPhone 4 decide to break.

I’m here to run through these different options, and give you the pro’s and con’s of each, hopefully helping you make the right choice.

First off, is it worth anything? Yes, absolutely. Unlike computers, iPhones tend to hold their value for a good amount of time. The fact that older ones, which are unlockable, and not available on other carriers such as t-mobile, Voice Stream, and other GSM carriers makes these phones very appealing to consumers that are stuck on these other carriers or those who do not want to sign a 2-year contract, just to get an iPhone. The whole industry flourishes, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

How broken is it? Is it worth repairing? Why put $50, $75, or even $100 into fixing it? Simple answer. You can still use it, should something happen to your current phone, it’s much cheaper to get it fixed than to go out and spend $200+ on a replacement iPhone. Did you know that to buy an iPhone 4 out of contract you’re looking at spending $599? That sure does make the $50-$100 repairs to have a backup sound a little more appealing. Whatever the break may be, worst case scenario you’re looking at spending about $125.00, give or take a few bucks, max, on a 3G Repair.

For things like cracked glass and a dead LCD, a DIY kit may be the perfect solution for getting your iPhone repair on the cheap if you’re up for a challenge. An iPhone 3G Glass kit runs you about $39.99. Throw in an LCD into the mix if your screen is totally shot, and you’re still only at $74.99.

Lastly, if you’re dead set that you have no intention on fixing your broken iPhone, we have one word for you, RECYCLE! iFixYouri has a full-scale program that will help you in the process of recycling your iPhone, all while putting a couple of bucks in your pocket. We’ll fix the iPhone and bring it back to near factory-spec condition, where we will then put it in hands of less-privileged who can’t afford a new one.

iFixYouri has many close ties with many low-income schools and shelters where we help the less fortunate by donating electronics like iPhones and computers. Not only is this helping others, but helping our environment as well by cutting back on electronic waste (e-waste).
