iPhone 3G Screen Damage Drop Test with Case

We decided to drop the iPhone 3G to test the damage to the glass screen and LCD, which our common causes for repair even with protective cases like we use here. An iPhone 3G repair is one of our most common fixes, LCD screen replacement services just about topping the list.

As you see in the video below, it took 5 drops to insure that the LCD was dead. Things were not looking to good early and after the 4th drop LCD failure seemed inevitable. The glass did not shatter, surprisingly enough. The case probably absorbed the impact when hitting the ground. If it weren’t for the case, this drop would have almost been a glass and LCD repair.

When looking at DIY repair for the iPhone 3G, the LCD display can be difficult to those unfamiliar with fixes of this nature. As this test demonstrates, just because the screen does not break does not mean there is not LCD damage, and vice versa.

Comparative Tests

In addition to this iPhone 3G drop test, we performed an iPhone 3Gs break test with a protective cover and it produced similar results (6 drops LCD damage). Our iPhone 4 bumper drop test resulted in broken glass and with the i4 this means the LCD will need replaced as well. The new design glues the LCD and glass together.

How do you think the iPhone 3G performs with a protective case?

Our iPhone repair technicians are trained to help both repair broken iPhones and help those looking for DIY repair solutions. Let us know if you have any questions, as it is our goal to provide customers with the best decisions possible.  Often times we get calls from customers who have ordered a wrong iPhone parts or made a broken iPhone worse.  Don’t let it happen to you and call now!

iPhone 3G Repair – Fix or recycle?

The iPhone took a giant leap when it made the leap from working on the old EDGE network to the 3G network. Streaming videos from your cell phone, fast picture messaging, and quick internet access exploded on the smartphone scene transitioning everyone to a mobile, fully portable tech world.

Being well into the whole iPhone 3G repair scene with generations of past 3G collecting dust, you may be questioning what exactly to do with that ‘ancient’ 1-year-old iPhone sitting in your desk drawer. Is it worth anything? If it’s broken, should you just chuck it? Or perhaps you may think about keeping it so you have a backup phone, should your near and dear iPhone 4 decide to break.

I’m here to run through these different options, and give you the pro’s and con’s of each, hopefully helping you make the right choice.

First off, is it worth anything? Yes, absolutely. Unlike computers, iPhones tend to hold their value for a good amount of time. The fact that older ones, which are unlockable, and not available on other carriers such as t-mobile, Voice Stream, and other GSM carriers makes these phones very appealing to consumers that are stuck on these other carriers or those who do not want to sign a 2-year contract, just to get an iPhone. The whole industry flourishes, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

How broken is it? Is it worth repairing? Why put $50, $75, or even $100 into fixing it? Simple answer. You can still use it, should something happen to your current phone, it’s much cheaper to get it fixed than to go out and spend $200+ on a replacement iPhone. Did you know that to buy an iPhone 4 out of contract you’re looking at spending $599? That sure does make the $50-$100 repairs to have a backup sound a little more appealing. Whatever the break may be, worst case scenario you’re looking at spending about $125.00, give or take a few bucks, max, on a 3G Repair.

For things like cracked glass and a dead LCD, a DIY kit may be the perfect solution for getting your iPhone repair on the cheap if you’re up for a challenge. An iPhone 3G Glass kit runs you about $39.99. Throw in an LCD into the mix if your screen is totally shot, and you’re still only at $74.99.

Lastly, if you’re dead set that you have no intention on fixing your broken iPhone, we have one word for you, RECYCLE! iFixYouri has a full-scale program that will help you in the process of recycling your iPhone, all while putting a couple of bucks in your pocket. We’ll fix the iPhone and bring it back to near factory-spec condition, where we will then put it in hands of less-privileged who can’t afford a new one.

iFixYouri has many close ties with many low-income schools and shelters where we help the less fortunate by donating electronics like iPhones and computers. Not only is this helping others, but helping our environment as well by cutting back on electronic waste (e-waste).

iDiagnose – Part 5 – iPhone does not sync, speaker does not work, or mic does not function.

Plug it in, sync it up, load your new music. Simple as that right? Not always. What happens when you plug it in, and nothing happens? Why are you getting no charge to your iPhone?

Perhaps it’s your cable. Most people have extras laying around. Seems like they’re as common as, well, I don’t know, an extension cord? Sure, we’ll go with that.

If it’s not your cable, it’s your dock connector. The dock connector is responsible for many functions in both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3Gs.

Problems with the dock connector come from:

  • Water damage – most common
  • Dropped iPhone – fairly common
  • Improper repairs – pretty darn common as well
  • Age – getting to be a little less common
  • Plugging iPhone into improper power source – finally, least common

Symptoms of a bad dock connector

  • iPhone will not charge
  • iPhone will not sync
  • Speakerphone sounds distorted, or does not work at all
  • People on other end of a phone call can not hear you
  • Home button does not work
  • Weak service signal

The dock connector is a vital feature of the iPhone. It controls numerous key functions and features that help make the iPhone what it is.

DIY Repair Difficulty – 5/10 – Moderately difficult

This repair can be a little tricky as it involves removing the entire logic board in order to remove the dock connector. With the glass removed, you’ll have to disconnect all connectors, remove all screws holding the logic board in place, and very gently remove the board. This will give you access to remove the 3 screws holding the dock in place. The dock connector consists of multiple iPhone parts put together into one unit. The mic, charging port, external speaker, home button pads, and the cellular antenna are all pieced together to make this one unit. If you are having any of the symptoms listed above, you are in need of a dock connector repair.

Turnaround time on iPhone dock connector Repair – Same day

With this iPhone repair service, our technicians will fix your dock connector problem in no time! All deliveries that we get here by 1pm, get fixed and shipped out the same day.  Whether you’re local in Palm Beach County, or a distant customer in California, iFixYouri can fix this problem for you quickly.

iPhone 4 Glass proving to not hold up as much as expected

The iPhone 4 has Front glass, and now back glass. It looks beautiful, but looks can be deceiving. It does not matter if there is a cracked screen. In that case, the iPhone 4 can be likened to a reflection of a supermodel on a broken mirror. Parts of her legs look good, yes, but its tough to know how good looking she is when the mirror is shattered.

We began receiving iPhone 4 repair calls the day it was released. A cry on the other side of the phone followed by a faint sniffle, “I just got out of the car with my phone on my lap and dropped it 1.5 ft to the ground! What do I do????”

“First off, take a deep breath, it’s only a phone and we’re here to help.”

As wild as this may sound, this is a daily occurrence, minus the crying part. Only one person we’ve had call us was actually crying 😉 and she okay’d us in using her story for our blog. As we spoke about in earlier blog posts when we drop tested iPhone parts prior to the iPhone 4’s official release, and again when we drop tested an iPhone 4 when we had the official release from Apple, the glass, being stronger, still is prone to breaking.

The new iPhone design is definitely revolutionary, and we agree with Apple, they did change everything, again. New glass, new camera, new everything, yet still the same problems. As with any high tech piece of technology, there are its’ growing pains, and pains that linger. Broken iPhone Glass and cracked screens are daily problems that we help alleviate. Now with twice as much glass, covering twice as much phone, this is a problem that we’re ready, willing, and able to tackle.

We stood behind Apple since before the days of the iPhone 2G, tackled the iPhone 3G repair and iPhone 3Gs repair, and now we’re up to bat with the iPhone 4.

Regardless of the material used on the front and back of the phone, it is a thing of beauty. No other small personal electronic on the market can come close to having the same feel, function, fit, or form like the iPhone does.

Verizon and the iPhone to Unite

The end is near. We never thought it would happen but the day is finally arriving in January. AT&T has had the iPhone monopoly in its hip pocket but as early as January 2011, it will have to share the iPhone with Verizon, thus increasing the odds of being able to make a call (reception burn #1). Reception or not, Let’s get Reaaaady tooooo Repaaaaaiirrrrrrrrr. It should not be any secret that those of us focusing on iPhone repair are happy about the announcement but nobody should be surprised.

It is being predicted by UBS AG analyst John Hodlik that the merger would provide Verizon with a boost in sales.

There are over 92 million Verizon customers, so while Verizon will get increased sales, Apple is really looking to get the big boom, boost or bump. They want to avoid a boo boo, which happens when you drop your phone on the ground, or hit your head on the kitchen cabinets. Hodulik went on to speculate Verizon customer might buy 3 million iPhones a quarter.  My hunch is that it will be higher than that.

The smartphone competition is getting heated as of late and this was the obvious move. This move was more obvious than Nebraska going to the Big Ten. Or Lindsay Lohans ‘drinking’ problem.  Or AT&T reception problems (reception burn #2).

The Apple iPhone elite have decided they can wait no longer. My thinking it has nothing to do with reception, although as burn #1 & 2 indicate, the punchlines just never get old.  It has everything to do with the market.

Enter the Google Android, which is becoming a bigger part of the marketplace. The Android Galaxy S is going to be pimped by every cell phone coverage carrier this side of the milky way (“Hey baby, touch screen all night”). The names are pretty cool too: T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant, Verizon Samsung Fascinate, Sprint Epic 4G, AT&T Samsung Captivate. With names like that, what is the iPhone to do? Not to mention the specs and other confusing information that even the most dedicated iPhone fanatic would admit are ‘comparable’ to Steve Jobs Wizardry.

You Must be the Change you Wish to see in the World – Mahatma Gandhi

As for me,  I’m liking the changes. I have been glued to AT&T like the new iPhone 4 Screen is to the LCD display. This is to say that if AT&T receptions dies I go with it. Of course, I don’t typically have reception problems but I have a problem with those dedicated to loving their phone on message boards, as opposed to paying attention to their families, homework or whatever ignored responsibility to instead boast randomly about a toy. It can be likened to the ‘my daddy can beat up your daddy’ syndrome that haunts our poor helpless tormented ashamed souls up until the time we realize our dad’s don’t know jack about cell phone technology, and as such, all related annoying behaviors should be terminated.

It is on me to be the change I want to see. It is on me to start playing around with the Android (and all the rest) to really know what I like. Or, just switch it up on the next upgrade, be happy (or frustrated) with my decision and document the experience. The ‘my phone is cooler than your phone’ line is only rewarding when taunting little kids who don’t even know how to use a phone. Or really old people, who have basically lost their hearing and all senses to communicate. But when dealing with other grown ups through blog comments or forum postings, the bickering is best left to the propaganda war machine, also known as anonymous posters disguised as one of us, hurling personal insults at someone who uses an a devise that may  not be their preferred choice.

Heres how it goes: it’s time to take the gloves off and sit around a campfire singing songs until our smartphone alarms go off in the morning. When someone loses reception, just pass your smart phone to the left hand side and be happy, verbal quirks silenced by the tranquil spirits of cell phone harmony.

In all seriousness though, the game has just changed and the gloves have come off by the cell phone gods, waiting for the big hook to influence the current swell of competition. Something tells me the people who had benefited from the AT&T long standing exclusivity are telling themselves now they knew the party could not last forever. Everybody else is waiting on the tremors, so we can tweet about it.

iPhone to go to Verizon? Rumors are saying this could happen in January!

This rumor has been going around for quite some time now. The date, seems to inevitably always get pushed out. Except for this time. Bloomberg sources state:

Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile-phone company, will start selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone next year, ending AT&T Inc.’s exclusive hold on the smartphone in the U.S., two people familiar with the plans said.

The device will be available to customers in January, according to the people, who declined to be named because the information isn’t public. Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman, and Jeffrey Nelson, a Verizon Wireless spokesman, declined to comment.

This is great news for iPhone users, and Verizon users alike. They’ll get the joy of the nation’s largest network, combined with the world’s latest and greatest gadget.

Network tests do show that AT&T’s networks, are in fact faster. Is Apple setting itself up for a checkmate in the smartphone world? From the looks of it, they’re already positioning themselves to put RIM, HTC, and all other smartphone manufacturers in check.

The latest numbers show that Apple has sold a stunning 1.7 million phones since the release of the latest and greatest, just 6 days ago! That’s more iPhone than some countries have people!

With Apple’s leap to Verizon, currently with approximately 90 million customers, who is to say that Apple couldn’t easily double the amount of iPhones on the street(currently around 50 millions, including 2G, 3G, 3Gs, and 4) over the next 4 or 5 years. This is not a far fetched number when you look at the reality of how many are on the streets now, and it came out only a few years ago back in 2007.

“Apple is going to dramatically increase the number of devices it sells in the U.S. when exclusivity at AT&T ends,” said Hodulik, who is based in New York and rates Verizon shares “neutral.” “It’s hard to ignore the quality issues that AT&T has faced.”

Verizon Wireless, which is building a high-speed fourth- generation network, plans to unveil several devices that will run on the new technology in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, Chief Executive Officer Lowell McAdam has said.

iDiagnose – Part 4 – iPhone Screen Repair – What repair do you really need?

You’re walking down the sidewalk and you reach in your pocket to pull out your iPhone that is ringing. It slips out of your hand and SMASH! It hits the concrete, hard.

This is an all too common scenario that we see happen every day. Sometimes it’s just the iPhone glass that needs to be repaired, sometimes it’s the glass and LCD, and yet sometimes it’s just the LCD. To some, this question can be answered with no hesitation, yet to others, this sounds like a trick question.
