I just bought and iPhone 4 and soon after spilled a glass of water on it. I dried it off immediately and it worked soon after. But now this morning it won’t turn on. Can you fix it?

Yes, we can fix that. While iPhone 4 water damage can be very bad, we can typically repair over 90% the phones. The big issue is corrosion but there are ways to avoid it. When your iPhone 4 gets wet you should take the back casing off. Then take the battery and SIM card out. Put it in a bag of rise. Or you can blow with hair dryer (on low). Or you can just let it sit with noted parts removed.

So you broke your new iPhone 4. Mad, upset, distraught.No matter what, it’s definitely frustrating. We have already see our fair share of broken iPhone 4’s, and they’re only about a month old.

Here’s a few things that we’ve picked up on so far with the recent release

You have a couple options when it comes to getting the right iPhone 4 fix

Apple – Try to return in, pray that the geniuses will have mercy on your soul and grant you a new iPhone. In all honesty, this probably will happen 1 out of maybe 10 or 15 times, if you’re lucky. The cost of this, well free. If they shun you and ask you to pay for a new one, well now we’re talking somewhere in the $599+ range.

Third party repair – iFixYouri has many iPhone 4 repair options. All with a wide variety of pricing options. Repairs range from $69-$199. Regardless of the repair, you’re being frugal, and saving money. If you’re going the third party route, remember, best price does not always equal best service. Find it cheap? iPhone 3G Screen Glass Breakdown

The iPhone 3G screen is made of glass and protection is typically a good start when using the product. It is optical quality glass, which sits under the frame to offer it some protection but if dropped on a hard surface such as concrete, it could easily shatter or crack. Because of the vulnerable screen an iPhone 3G repair is one of our most popular repair services.

When you feel the glass it seems pretty hard. Overall the 3G glass screen is hard but still susceptible to scratching from every day wear and tear. An old myth that existed when the iPhone 3G was released was that the new glass would not scratch anymore, compared to it’s plastic counterpart. While it may not scratch as easily, don’t expect perfection. Think of it this way: the windshield on your car is made from glass that is very strong and durable. If you own the car a few years though, you may notice the windshield wipers causing tiny scratches. If somebody throws a brick at the glass windshield it will likely break. The iPhone 3G is the same way but it does not take a brick, just a fall out of your lap when you are getting out of the car can be enough to shatter the screen.

Invisible Screen protectors and plastic covers can help with both with both scratching and shattering of glass. As many of our in-house tests have proved though, they may not protect everything behind the screen, such as the LCD digitizer display. Th screen may often freeze (whit freeze) which can be a result of LCD damage.

The multi-touch touchscreen for the iPhone 3G was still new and exciting when it was released clear back in July  2008.  The back is made of plastic, which is different than the aluminum back of the original iPhone and the glass back of the iPhone 4.

The biggest different between the iPhone 3G screen and other models (besides the 3Gs) is the fact that the glass is not glued to the LCD display. This is great if the glass breaks, because a DIY repair can be accomplished for about $30. If the LCD goes out too, the replacement LCD parts for a DIY repair can be expensive. The difficulty changes too as a screen repair can be simple (relative to your experience) if you know what you are doing. The problem with the 3G screen being separated from the LCD is that dirt and dust can get in front of the display and behind the glass.

Some people don’t like the 3G glass because it can give off a yellowish tent and be hard to see when not looking at it at the right angle. Some iPhone 3G users have complained that the numbers and letters can seem blurred out with some phones. Others say it’s a grayish dull affect that makes the over experience less enjoyable and productive.

Overall, at the time of the release the iPhone 3G was awesome and the screen, even with some of the complaints, was an advancement over past models. If you are experiencing any of the issues discussed above and an iPhone repair or free diagnostics is needed, do not hesitate to call for help.

As our much overlooked 3G and 3Gs tests showed, even with protective covers the iPhone can be in danger of LCD display issues even when the glass does not shatter or get cracked. Sometimes the iPhone 3G screen is cracked but the LCD behind it is fine. Screen display issues varies in price depending on the exact need, which often times comes down to if the glass and/or LCD is broken.

An iPhone 3Gs repair is much the same story, as broken glass can be an easier type of DIY repair but LCD damage can be much more difficult. Overall, fixing a 3G iPhone will cost a little more than the 3G.

We have detailed closely our ability to break the iPhone 4 on concrete, with a protective bumper and without. You can check out our video section for all of our film sessions. The bumper does not seem to make much of a difference in protecting from glass damage. When the iPhone 4 screen breaks, the LCD behind it is also ruined. This raises the overall cost of iPhone parts needed and make the DIY iPhone 4 repair process much more difficult. iPhone 4 Screen Damage bumper test

We have heard a lot of talk about the iPhone 4 bumper helping with reception problems but now we test it to see if it can prevent glass and LCD damage. The results are not good for iPhone 4 owners who just got a protective bumper, as the 3rd drop on concrete resulted in a shattered screen. The iPhone 4 repair team is on standby to answer any questions and as you see in the video below, for good reason.

Going back to our first test, it was noted that the i4 glass sit on top of the frame, rather than inset like the 3g and 3gs. This fact, along with glass on both sides of the iPhone 4, makes broken glass on the i4 a common reality. The protective bumper is the same bumper that is supposed to help with the much publicized iPhone 4 antenna.

We’ve have known for a little while now that iPhone 4 bumpers do not offer all of the protection needed because customers have called in an told us.  Although it does not take a video by iFixyouri to inform you that dropping your new iPhone 4 on concrete is a bad idea, hopefully this video squashed any doubts as to the bumpers effectiveness.  A DIY fix for any type of cracked glass on an i4 screen can be difficult.

Other Tests

We have now performed three tests on the iPhone 4. The first was with the parts (frame, glass) but not the guts. The next one was with a new iPhone 4. The latest was with an iPhone 4 with the bumper. In comparing the 3 tests, we can’t find much of a difference.  What really matters is how you drop it. If it hits on a corner you may get out of trouble completely, or with just a scuff mark. If it drops on the glass though, on top of concrete, you could be in serious trouble. This scenario is very likely every time you get out of your car.

We also performed an iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G test with protective cases and instead of the glass breaking, there was LCD damage on the fifth and sixth drop, respectively.

iPhone 3Gs Screen LCD Damage Drop Test with Case

Our test of the iPhone 3Gs showed similar results as the 3G test, as the glass held up but the LCD was damaged after 6 drops even with a protective case.  This helps explain why iPhone 3Gs repair is so popular because even with protection the 3Gs was not a fan of concrete. The glass holds up nicely and that is a good thing. In the world of a DIY iPhone 3Gs fix, LCD repair is a high degree of difficulty. Sometimes a cracked screen of a 3Gs is easier and more cost effective to fix.

We can’t say this test proves a protective case is not worth the investment. It is better if it breaks on the sixth fall as opposed to the third. But this shows that even with precautionary measures taken, your iPhone 3Gs is at risk. Our repair technicians have seen countless numbers of broken 3Gs iPhones and some of them used protective cases so the results come as no great surprise.

Similar Tests

As you see with the blogs posted directly before and after this one, the 3G and iPhone 4 were also put to the test.  The iPhone 3G was dropped 5 times before the LCD was due for a repair. The iPhone 4 screen bumper test resulted in shattered glass. This shows that no matter what model iPhone you bought, it is best that you handle with care.
