Is This The New iPhone 5s (in Gold)?

Gold iPhone 5s
Notice the difference in color from both the black and white versions.

Over at Buzzfeed, new photos have leaked showing what looks like it could be the new gold iPhone 5s we mentioned the other day. No word on whether these photos are legit, but it does seem to be the same size as the other two. Buzzfeed goes on to write:

“The blog that posted the images said the new “champagne gold” colored shell was provided by mobile phone parts supplierMoumontai. BuzzFeed could not verify the authenticity of the images.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is slated to announce its new device on September 10. Looks like we’ll find out in a couple weeks! Head over to Buzzfeed to see the other photos.

Best Smartphone Apps of August 2013

Best Smartphone AppsHere are some of the best smartphone apps — for iPhone and Android phones — that we’ve come across in the last week. Check them out, and share!

Zagat (Free)

The famous reviewer guide Zagat is back as a free iPhone app, right now for only nine cities in the United States, but with more cities on the way. Zagat is well-known as a service that gives insightful reviews for restaurants, bars, and all other hot spots in your town. Of smartphone apps, this is my favorite.

Blux Camera Pro

Blux Camera Pro is a great new camera app that automatically retrieves data like your location, the amount of available light, local weather, and on-screen analysis to suggest the best possible settings for your shots, and suggests settings that may improve your shot, with an automated voice to boot. It comes with a lot of different lighting presets and shooting modes. Finally, it has a setting to get rid of the lens flare.

Google Keyboard (Android)

Google has released its keyboard as an app. Google Keyboard has some good new functionality like gesture typing, was typing, word prediction etc. Now you don’t have to wait for the OS update to use the new functionality of the Google keyboard.

Musaic (Free)

Musaic is a music discovery app that allows you re-discover your iTunes selection while selecting new songs “you might like,” which are then purchasable through the app. What’s more, it has a slick “mosaic” of album cover art (it automatically finds the art from your music titles) and places them in an easy-to-use interface.

Double Twist with Magic Radio

Developed by Double Twist, Magic Radio is a music-streaming subscription service add-on. It allows access for over 13 million songs and users to sync to iTunes. If you want to hear something new, create a new station and the tracks you want to listen to. MagicRadio is free for 7 days, Once it expires you can subscribe it for only $3.99. Download it From Google Play

Documents by Readdle

Readdle makes some of our favorite productivity apps for iOS, including Printer Pro (very useful if your printer doesn’t support AirPrint) and Scanner Pro (which turns an iPad into a scanner of sorts). Documents by Readdle is its entry into the document viewer segment dominated by the likes of GoodReader. As well as simply viewing documents of various kinds, you can open archives, annotate PDFs and play media files. It has a web browser to allow you to download files from various sources and you can set the ‘user agent’ to make the browser impersonate a variety of different web clients, so the site you like that blocks mobile Safari is no longer an issue. Its great strength is its connectivity to various cloud-based storage services such as Box.net, Dropbox and iCloud — just about any service you could name. With iCloud, you can even set up subfolders to hold documents of different kinds — that’s right, a file system, right there in iCloud. Now that the app is on the iPhone as well as iPad, that means you can keep documents from apps that don’t necessarily support iCloud natively synced across your devices. If Documents By Readdle were to cost you money we’d say it was worth the price for that alone. As it’s free, we don’t understand why you haven’t downloaded it yet.

Quip (Free)

Quip claims to be a “modern word processor” designed for collaboration across different devices. Aimed at workplaces as well as domestic use, it presents documents in “chat-like” update threads, showing which users are online and using Twitter-like @mentions to link to people and documents.

Office Mobile for Office 365 (Free)

Microsoft’s Office Mobile app is finally available — however, only in the US for Android smartphones (Apple version coming soon). While it requires an Office 365 subscription. it allows you view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, including email attachments.

Google AdSense (Free)

For those already using Adsense, you’ll be able to browse how much money you’re making, analytics of top custom and URL channels, and get individual payment alerts. More features are planned for the coming months.

Color Zen

Color Zen is a puzzle game. It is developed by Large Animal Games. Very addictive game, the players have to discover a path through an abstract world of colors and shapes. The object of the game is to fill the screen so that it matches the border without leaving any colors behind.

Cleaning Your Electronic Device

Cleaning Your Electronic Device

Cleaning Your Electronic Device

Something we at iFixYouri hear a lot: “How should I properly clean my electronic device?” As we use our computers, our tablets, and our smartphones on a regular basis, it only stand to reason that they are going to get dirty (In fact, as I am typing this, I am noticing all these little stains and marks on my laptop screen . . . I should take my own advice after writing this).

The problem of course is that some substances and electronic devices don’t mix, namely water, and so many people are hesitant when coming to clean their device; or worse, they aren’t hesitant and they end up ruining the thing they were trying to maintain. So here is a quick course on how to clean your various devices without damaging them, and keeping them nice and presentable.

Smart Phones

Smart phones, like your iPhone or your Blackberry, can take a ton of abuse, and easily get dirty. Forget about just your filthy, filthy hands: in your pocket, in your purse, in your bed, your smart phone can get lint, dirt, and all other sorts of undesirable foreign material stuck in the small holes of your phone. Or you may spill sauce or juice on them while typing and eating. Whatever it is, your phone needs to be cleaned on a fairly regular basis.

Make sure the phone is unplugged and powered off. For simple smudges on the screen, use a lint-free cloth (with the iPhone this comes standard). If there is a hard-to-remove spill of say juice or a soft drink, you can use a small amount of water on just the screen.  Don’t use abrasive chemical cleaning agents like Windex – they weren’t meant for LCD screens.

If you have some lint stuck in the connector or some other small crevice, use the compressed air can.

Laptops

The main culprit in a dirty laptop, or for all electronic devices for that matter, is dust. Dust particles are easily attracted to electronic devices thanks to the fact that they are electrostatic and dust can be electronically charged. For computers and laptops, they have cooling fans in dust is sucked in and piles up.

The screen: use a soft, lint free cotton cloth. If needed, you can use a little bit of rubbing alcohol on the cloth to clean the spots I mentioned earlier, or things like finger smudges.

Keyboard: use a small vacuum cleaner, or an compressed air can, to remove the dust and other particles from the cracks of the keys. NEVER use any liquid to clean the keyboard. After the dust is out of the cracks, you can use a small cloth rag, like the one used on your screen, to get rid of the excess.

Cleaning the inside (if you feel expert enough to open up your laptop): be sure to turn it off first, then remove the cover. Dust can be removed using compressed air. This is the easiest and safest method for cleaning the fans, the motherboard, and the rest of the internal hardware.

New iPhone Going Gold

Gold iPhone?Looks like the iPhone is getting a new color – first black, then white, and now gold? The folks over at Techcrunch say so:

Yes, there will be a gold iPhone.

That’s the latest I’m hearing from multiple sources after several weeks of rumors and possible component leaks suggesting the same thing. At first, I couldn’t believe Apple would break from the tradition of offering the simple choice: black and white (or “slate” and “silver” if you prefer for the iPhone 5) for their flagship device. Gold simply seemed too gaudy, perhaps even tacky. But a few compelling arguments countered my disbelief. And now, upon checking, sure enough, there will be gold.

On Friday, Rene Ritchie of iMore, made the most compelling argument for the golden iPhone yet. After hearing from his own sources that the gold iPhone seemed to be real, Ritchie checked with his colleague Ally Kazmucha, who noted that gold would be one of the “easiest colors to anodize onto an iPhone”. Much easier than say, black (which is likely why the current black iPhone 5 has more of a “slate” back color).

It will be interesting to see if this trend of new colors continues as the iPhone evolves. The article goes on to talk about the rumored iPhone 5C and iPhone 5s:

Finally, I think one more reason why we’re seeing this golden iPhone now may be related to the rumored “iPhone 5C” device — that is, the lower-cost iPhone. While I have no concrete information about that device, there seems to be way too much smoke around it both existing and launching in several colors, for there not to be fire.

(I also wonder if the recent push by Apple to sell more iPhones from their own Apple Stores has to do with the strategy for the iPhone 5C roll-out.)

On his The Talk Show podcast this past week, John Gruber and I talked a bit about how Apple might differentiate the rumored iPhone 5S from the rumored iPhone 5C. Beyond speed and price, color seems likely to be a key differentiator. It’s entirely possible that Apple decided to keep the focus on white and black (again, silver and slate) for the high-end model, while choosing more playful colors for the lower end. But some people, bored of black and white, may have opted for the 5C simply to add some color to their iLives. So the gold iPhone 5S (with a white front plate, one would assume) would seem to be a decent compromise in that scenario.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more stuff. We’re always excited when new Apple products are concerned . . .

Turn Your iPad into a Home Theater

iPad Home TheaterWhat can’t an iPad do? As a mobile device, you can check email, communicate with friends, play games, and catch up on work. But what about using it to turn your living room into a multimedia home theater? Turning your iPad into a home theater may sound like a tricky, over-technical chore that would be better left to hiring a professional to do, but it’s actually a very simple process, and can be done relatively cheaply.

There are products such as Belkin’s Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater.

The system is designed to enhance games, movies, and music for the iPad. This allows for great sound, but any videos are still seen on the iPad screen, and it costs about $200.

The sleeker and more economical way to integrate the iPad into a real home theater is more work-intensive, but well worth the effort.

1) Purchase a dock – A dock will allow you to have a stable location for your iPad while allowing for the connections to be made more easily. There is the simple Apple’s iPad Dock, which goes for around $30, and will allow you to charge the iPad while docked. there are also more expensive docks, such as Cambridge Audio’s iD100 iPad Dock ($236), which adds audio and video connectivity, or Just Mobile’s Xtand Encore ($59.95) or Twelve South’s BookArc ($29.99).

Wire Connections – Depending on the dock you buy, you may need to connect your iPad to your home system directly, particularly if it has a USB port and supports the dock interface. However, these docks are sometimes limited to audio only. If you want video connected as well, get a digital AV adapter. For this option, your iPad will need to be tethered to your system. Alternately, if you have Apple TV, this can control your content without the need to keep your iPad connected while using your system.

iPad as Remote Control – If you can connect your iPad with your system remotely, why not have the option to use your iPad as a giant remote control, giving you access and control over all of the other aspects of your home theater system? A lot of manufacturers have remote apps that allow for control over the other devices — TV, DVD plaver, etc. If you have AT&T’s U-verse, for example, you can remotely control your cable box over Wi-Fi. But for more control, look into products such as Gear4′s Unity, Logitech’s Harmony Link or Griffin’s Beacon. All three will enable your iPad to remotely control most if not all of the home theater components you have on hand.

iTunes – Aside from controlling your TV and DVDs, what about watching and listening your video and audio content that you have stored on iTunes? For this, you need to enable Home Sharing. This is available on iTunes 9 or higher. Movies, music videos, and TV shows are all now playable on any machine in your network you authorize via Home Sharing. Authorization is simple, but requires you to have an iTunes account, and to have authorized the computer in question to play media associated with that account. Once that’s done, your Home Share libraries should appear in your source list. And if you have an Apple TV, you can use Apple’s own Remote App to access your iTunes music library.

Home Projector – What about turning your living room into a personal movie theater? If you want to create a theatrical ambiance, there is always the ability to purchase a projector. On the high-end, there is the sleek Epson Megaplex MG-850HD Easy Home Theater. At $699, this comes with a device dock, 2 10-watt speakers, and ultra bright, HD quality. It’s also portable, so it can be used for business, parties, or whatever you may need it for.

Using Cloud Computing Services with Mobile Devices

cloud-computingCloud computing has become immensely popular, thanks to the simplicity with which it allows access of your information from anywhere in the world. Now, with the rise of the mobile device as one of the most common ways to access the internet, cloud computing is easier and more convenient than ever.

Not everybody knows all of the ways they can access this — any iphone, iPad, tablet or smart phone will do — but some people aren’t even familiar with cloud computing itself, and the whole thing may initially seem intimidating, or at the very least unsafe. This post will hopefully clear a lot of that up for the beginner.

What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is a somewhat vague term. In its essence, it refers to the use of storage or software that can be shared, used, edited, or otherwise collaborated upon from various different devices at the same time, thanks to an interconnected network (sometimes also called distributed computing). Everything from virtual business infrastructures and internet data storage to Google Drive — even multiplayer video games — can be considered cloud computing. Honestly, due to the rise of sharing sites thanks to social media, the lines between so-called cloud computing and the internet itself are blurring. Suffice it to say: if you can share, you’re on the cloud.

There are separations in terms of whether you’re talking about Infrastructure as a Service (IaaP), Platform as a service (PaaS), or Software as a Service (SaaS). IaaS refers to the network, the servers, and the hardware; PaaS refers to the web server, the execution runtime, databases, and the operating system; SaaS refers to the various applications. For our purposes, we’re just going to stick to SaaS, or more simply, the apps.

Using Mobile Devices for Business

The simplest way to use your mobile device to access cloud computing is through various apps. Google apps such as Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar are simple examples, as are communication vehicles such as Skype or YouTube. But let’s look at some of the apps more specifically tailored for businesses.

Dropbox – Dropbox is a great service that allows the user to share and store files and folders, which can be accessed by others thanks to file synchronizations. It can also synchronize this data on one’s home computer. It’s a very useful tool when sharing large files which can’t be emailed, or trying to read something on your iPhone or iPad that you just can’t store due to memory. There are free and paid services with Dropbox.

Evernote – Evernote allows you to take notes – including photos, videos, voice recordings, and any other type of information you might think of while you’re waiting in line at the grocery store. Instead of the less efficient notepads that most mobile devices have, it will synch up the info with the website (must register an account) so that you can also access them with your home computer.

Basecamp – Basecamp is a web-based project management tool which features file sharing, time tracking, to-do lists, progress management, messaging, and file sharing.

Basecamp has four different plans available starting at $24 per month right up to $149 per month and all accounts have a 30 day free trial.

Xero – From Wikipedia: “Xero is an online accounting software product for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as personal finance. [It] allows business owners and their employers, accountants, bookkeepers and other financial advisors access to up-to-date financial records in real-time with the only system requirement being a suitably-configured internet browser.”

This is for people who want constant access to their business finances.

Logmein – Logmein allows for remote access to computers via your mobile device – anything from remote printing to desktop sharing. Services range from the free services to various paid services.

Carbonite – Carbonite is an online backup service that provides unlimited backup space to consumers and small businesses.  Available to both Windows and Mac users. This is a useful tool for backup and recovery issues.

What should you do if you spill liquid on your Macbook keyboard?

The unfortunate has happened. Sitting at your desk, you turn around. Spinning back to throw your hand back to the keyboard you quickly forget the drink sitting directly next to your brand new Macbook Air. SPLASH! You now enter absolute FULL PANIC MODE with liquid all over your MacBook keyboard! AHHHHH!

We’re going to explain a couple of quick steps that you have to immediately do in order to increase your chances of survival, and well, if you don’t take these steps, we’re going to let you know exactly how we can help.

What To Do When You Spill on Your MacBook

  1. Immediate unplug your device. You want to make sure you cut all power going to the computer. Any current still going through the laptop can short it out.
  2. Power down the laptop. This should go without saying, but you would be amazed at how often we see people leaving the power on.
  3. With the screen still open, flip the laptop upside down. You want to prevent the liquid from seeping further into the computer and getting to anything important. You want to leave the screen open so that the liquid does not drain onto the screen. TRY TO COMPLETE STEPS 1-3 AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, WITHIN THE FIRST 10 SECONDS.
  4. Remove the battery. Since the battery still carries a current, you have to cut all ties with electricity as fast as possible.
  5. With the computer upside down, gently dab the area with a paper towel.
  6. Do not attempt to turn the MacBook on for at least 48 hours, if at all, prior to having a professional look at it.

If you follow these simple steps, you significantly increase the chances of saving your MacBook or PC laptop from imminent doom. Fingers crossed and positive energy and you may have a survivor.

Bring Your MacBook to a Professional Repair Company

This is where iFixYouri comes in. Even if you were able to perform all the steps above, and everything seems to work as normal, we HIGHLY recommend sending it in for a proper MacBook water damage repair.

With our service, rest assured that your laptop is in good hands. We have an extremely high success rate due to the fact that we not only properly clean the logic boards of all major models of Apple and PC computers, but we also have the ability to offer full logic board repair.

When we receive your device, we will strip down all the major components and properly clean every single piece. When water spills on an electronic device, mineral deposits remain once it begins to dry. It’s these mineral deposits that cause corrosion and make chips and circuits short out. Once we know all components are clean, we’ll run a full diagnostics on the computer, testing each component one by one. Often times, just the cleaning will get your laptop back to good, working condition.

In some cases, we see that the computer needs a new keyboard. Other times, a logic board suffered catastrophic failure. This type of rework is not something that can easily be done at home, as it requires extremely qualified and skilled technicians and expensive machinery. This combination has made it so that iFixYouri as a company can repair nearly every water-damaged MacBook and MacBook Pro that comes through our doors on a daily basis. We carry the highest success rate in the industry.

We do not recommend putting your computer with dried rice. Unlike a cell phone, it will leave a lot of residue in areas that will be near-impossible to clean. Use silica gel, which is available in most hardware stores.

Screen Shot 2013-05-15 at 11.44.20 PM

No two water-damaged computers are ever the same. By taking these measures listed, and doing them quickly, you can significantly increase your chances of having a computer that remains functioning even a liquid-related mishap.

If you have a question on any of our MacBook or MacBook Pro water damage repair services, feel free to call 888-494-4349 or email us at [email protected] today.

Today is Earth Day. Let’s say NO to recycling! Well, sort of.

We’ve decided to become a bit “anti-recycling” here at iFixYouri. Now not with all things. We’re still firm believers in recycling soda cans and water bottles, but lets bring things to a reality point here; with certain things REPAIRING is really better for the environment than recycling! Use, repair, re-use.

iPads are a great example of why you should still repair, versus discard, and buy a new one. The iPad 1 to the iPad 2 had quite a few changes. Apple added a camera, a sleeker back housing, a faster processor, and a small myriad of other features that we all need so so badly and we’d have a hard time living without.

I recently broke my iPad 2 and was left scratching my head and trying to decide what I should do. Should I go out and buy the latest and greatest iPad 4? Or should I stick with the old and trusty iPad 2? I stopped into my local store just to give it a test run. It felt the same and looked identical. The only real difference I could see was the processor was a little quicker. This to me just isn’t enough to justify spending $500 on a new device vs $159.99 on an ipad repair that virtually looked the same and still ran all the same apps. The differences between models of all these crazy devices that have been coming out recently are so minor it’s so hard to tell the difference. To me, the retina ipad looks just like my ipad 2.

We live in a consumers market and in a consumers market, we’re often driven to replace and recycle. We’re trying to change that mentality. We’re trying to get people to realize that repairing is really the way to go! Recycle your newspaper and cardboard boxes. Recycle your water bottles and beer cans! Reuse and repair your devices!

Every year millions of devices get thrown into our landfill. We’re more concerned about this than most people are, as we are a repair business, and we’re trying to play our roll in order to minimize the impact that these devices have on our planet when their lifespan has come to an end.

We work with a tight group of recycling companies that can handle responsibly disposing of devices, should a device finally get to the point of non-repair.

We’d like to help. And we’d like you to help. Put some thought into it and some care. If you have any questions about repair or recycling, give us a call at 888-494-4349 or email us at [email protected].
