Japan Has Turned Thousands of Damaged Phones Into Olympic Medals

Billions of people around the world are eager to watch well-seasoned athletes from their country compete in the Tokyo Summer Olympics after a year-long delay. In the meantime, Japan has turned thousands of damaged phones into Olympic medals.

How Japan Turned Damaged Phones Into Olympic Medals

Hosting the Olympics is an accomplishment, and winning an Olympic gold medal (or 23… looking at you, Michael Phelps) is an accomplishment too. This year’s Olympic Games will be remembered for one huge achievement, however, which is the use of metals from damaged devices to make the medals exclusively.

This is thanks to the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project, which strives toward an innovative future for all by recycling broken and unwanted devices.

Participants of the project turned in devices from April 2017 to March 2019. This resulted in the collection of approximately 78,985 tons of metal from 6.2 million mobile devices, and a total of 5,00 gold, silver, and bronze medals ready for the Summer Olympics.

The Tokyo 2020 Medal Project is a step in the right direction to lessen the amount of e-waste polluting the planet.

What exactly is e-waste? According to the Great Lakes Electronics Corporation, e-waste, or electronic waste, is defined as electronic products that are unwanted, not working, and nearing or at the end of their “useful life.” Once a device is considered e-waste, it is often dumped on the side of the road, only to take up more space in landfills.

  • Smartphones, flip phones, brick phones, etc.
  • Computers
  • Flat-screen TVs
  • Gaming consoles
  • Smart Watches
  • Tablets
  • Radios
  • Copiers

This issue is much larger than a smartphone. On a global scale, approximately 50 million tons of e-waste are created each year.

Just in Japan, one of the top three e-waste producing countries, over 700,000 tons of electronics are discarded every year.

The Most E-Waste Producing Countries

  • China
  • India
  • Japan
  • Canda
  • Israel
  • Chile
  • Columbia
  • Brazil
  • United States
  • Australia

Something as simple as reusing, repurposing, and recycling your broken devices can significantly reduce e-waste.

To slow the spread of e-waste pollution, countries such as South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan require manufacturers to recycle 75 percent of their yearly electronic production.

Final Thoughts

As a company that cares about environmental protection, iFixYouri guarantees that no part of your damaged device is discarded after use. Your damaged screens, motherboards, and other components are sent to a licensed recycler to reduce e-waste pollution. Tech Reboot, our sister company, buys your old and broken devices for the most money back!

If your device is deemed too damaged to be repaired or hold any value, iFixYouri will happily take it for recycling at our expense. Don’t just toss your damaged smartphones, computers, and tablets in the trash. Our goal is to keep as much e-waste out of landfills as possible, so drop your damaged electronics at any of your locations

Here Are Some Tips For Getting the Most Out of Your iPhone

Modern phones can be very difficult to operate for many people in today’s society, especially seniors. With a total of 20 iPhone models and updates made with each release, iPhones have become a complex tool. Here are some tips for getting the most out of your iPhone.

Getting the Most Out of Your iPhone

Once you buy an iPhone, you will want to learn everything the device has to offer with these tips.

Set up the iPhone Properly

After you have purchased your iPhone, there are several steps you must follow to ensure that your device is properly set up and ready to use.

  1. Turn on Your iPhone

Hold down your iPhone’s power button until the screen lights up and reads “Hello.” You will then choose your language and country.

          OR

Use Quick Start

If you already own a device with iOS 11 or later, bring your devices close together to easily transfer information.

  1. Connect to a Network

Choose a Wi-Fi network, cellular network, or iTunes to continue setting up your device.

  1. Set up a passcode, Face ID, and Touch ID

Make sure to secure your phone with a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. You can set up a 6-digit passcode, or use facial recognition and your fingerprint to access your phone’s data.

  1. Transfer important information and data

If you have an iCloud account, you can easily transfer your data to your new device.

  1. Sign in with your Apple ID

Sign in with your Apple ID and password. If you do not have an ID or forgot your login information, click the link below. It will prompt you to create a login and verify your information.

  1. Activate Siri, Automatic Updates, and Display Options

This step is not necessary, but it does make your iPhone easier to use. With Siri as a personal assistant, automatic in-app or device updates, and plenty of display options, navigating and staying up-to-date is done effortlessly.

Your iPhone is also able to be synced with your email account. You will be able to manage your calendar and add/delete contacts on your iPhone. Gmail, Yahoo, and MSN all support iPhones.

Web Surfing

Safari comes with all iPhone models, but other browsers are available for download, too, including Google Chrome and Firefox. Installing the right browser is essential.

Music

It is also very important to learn how to manage various music options. A beginner wants to know how to download and purchase songs, create playlists, and stream music on different platforms.

Downloading the Right Apps

Your iPhone’s effectiveness will greatly be increased if you choose the right apps. Do not select too many apps, but rather the ones you need and are likely to use. There are many great apps to select from, ranging from gaming apps to cooking apps.

Jailbreaking

While it is not an easy task to jailbreak an iPhone, certain applications make the process much simpler than it would otherwise be. Installing jailbreak software on an iPhone lets you download apps that aren’t available on the App Store. Although it is perfectly legal to jailbreak your iPhone, Apple will not support any difficulties you encounter as a result of your actions.

When your iPhone breaks while you’re trying to use it more effectively, you can depend upon iFixYouri to fix it.

Laptop Breakdown 101: The Display

In iFixYouri’s last Laptop Breakdown blog post, we went in-depth about the different types of keyboards, and it’s time to do the same with displays. A laptop’s display quality is essential because it allows you to view what you are doing with great clarity, color, and details. Keep reading to get the laptop breakdown 101 all about the display and learn about the different types, resolutions, and more!

Click here to read our last Laptop Breakdown post!

The Importance of Your Laptop’s Display

Unlike a keyboard which is considered an input device, a display is an output device. Rather than having the option to insert information at your own will with a keyboard, how a laptop’s display presents information is rarely under your control. Therefore, it is important to choose a display that is appropriate for your laptop’s intended use.

It is also important to know the different display types.

Different Laptop Displays and Sizes

The standard laptop screen is an LCD or liquid crystal display. An LCD’s overall purpose is to provide an even light source behind the screen.

An LCD can have one of two light sources: LED and CCFL.

Different points around the laptop’s screen are illuminated by LEDs or Light-Emitting Diodes.

CCFLs or Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lights use lighting technology to project images on the LCD with a lightbulb in the back of the screen.

Laptop screens generally range from 11.6” to 17”. The bigger the screen, the bigger the cost.

Different Display Resolutions

A laptop display also has different resolutions or the number of pixels displayed on the screen. The higher the resolution, the better the image quality.

720p: HD (High Definition) Resolution; 1280 X 720.

1080p: FUll HD Resolution; 1920 X 1080.

1440p: Quad HD Resolution; 2560 X 1440. Typically used with flagship phones and videogame monitors.

2160p: Also known as 4K or Ultra HD Resolution; 3840 X 2160.

4320p: Also known as 8K or Full HD Resolution; 7680 X 4320.

Touchscreen vs. Non-touchscreen

So far you have read about the different types of displays and resolutions of a laptop screen. Now it’s time to consider if you prefer a touchscreen or non-touchscreen device.

There are two types of touchscreens that a laptop can have: resistive and captive.

Resistive: A resistive touchscreen is made up of two layers, each with resistive and conductive currents. When you tap the screen, the layers come together and change the electric current. In return, the device will recognize this action and start to perform a task such as swiping to another screen or opening an app. A resistive screen does not allow for several points of contact.

Captive: A captive touchscreen is made of a single layer that works as different coordinates. It functions and gets its electrical charge from the human body. The electrical energy flow on the screen shifts with every point of contact. Unlike a resistive screen, a captive screen can have more than one point of contact.

Pros and Cons of a Touchscreen Laptop

A touchscreen…

  • is straightforward and easy to use.
  • allows you to multitask and complete tasks sooner.
  • is useful for note-taking and designing.
  • offers a High-quality display.

But also…

  • Drains your battery
  • Costs more than non-touchscreen laptops.

How to Repair a Broken Laptop Screen

Laptops are very complex devices and are not always easy to repair yourself. Many times, a self-repair can lead to further damage.

Simple fixes such as wiping down your screen or putting a hinge back into place can be done right at home.

But if your laptop has a cracked screen or damaged LCD screen, you need to turn to trustworthy tech repair experts, such as those at iFixYouri.

Every repair service starts with a series of diagnostic tests to determine your laptop’s core issue. In most cases, repairs are minimal.

Send your broken laptop to iFIxYouri and let repair experts take care of the rest! All you have to do is add your laptop’s corresponding screen repair to the cart, check out, and mail your device with the shipping label we email you.

Final Thoughts

If you are considering buying a new laptop, here are a few options with great displays:

  • Apple MacBook Air M1
  • DELL XPS 13
  • HP Spectre x360
  • Acer Swift 3
  • Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch

And if you have an older laptop that you want to get rid of, sell your device to a buy-back company and make money quickly!

Laptop Breakdown 101: The Keyboard

Whether you just got a new laptop or have had one for years, it is always good to know its different parts and functions in the case that you need a laptop repair one day. Let’s start iFixYouri’s blog series, Laptop Breakdown 101, by discussing a key component, the keyboard.

First, let’s cover the basics.

Basic Functions of a keyboard

Your keyboard is an essential component of your laptop, and without it, I would not be able to write this blog and you would not be able to make a Google search to find it. Because it is an input device, a keyboard allows you to enter letters, numbers, and other characters that will appear on the monitor. When these characters are consistently entered one after the other, the action is called typing.

What are the keyboard’s functions besides typing and why is it an essential element of a laptop, even with voice control rising in popularity? There are many uses for a keyboard that even voice control cannot accomplish.

  • Write documents
  • Navigate your laptop and search the web
  • Send functions to the computer
  • Game

10 Types of Keyboards

The standard keyboard typically has 104 keys and is often presented in a QWERTY format, which represents the first six keys at the upper left row of the keyboard. There are several other keyboards that all function a bit differently and serve a unique purpose.

Multimedia keyboard: A keyboard with media keys, or additional keys that control audio playback and pause.

Mechanical keyboard: What you may imagine when you think of a keyboard. Each key requires a spring and switch to be able to input information.

Wireless keyboard: A keyboard that allows you to communicate with your computer using WiFi and Bluetooth connection.

Virtual keyboard: Software that allows you to enter characters by tapping on a touch screen. Virtual keyboards can be found on most smartphones and tablets. In the case that your virtual keyboard is not working, your device needs an LCD repair rather than a keyboard replacement.

USB keyboard: A keyboard that requires you to use a USB cord to connect it to the computer.

Membrane keyboard: A keyboard that uses pressure pads, or membranes, beneath the keys to input information. Many modern laptops include membrane keyboards, such as the MacBook Pro

Ergonomic keyboard: With the E-Key, you can reduce the stress on your fingers, reduce fatigue, and more.

Different Laptop Sizes

Standard: Typically measuring 18” and has 104 keys

Laptop Size: Sizes vary depending on the overall size of the laptop, but research shows that the typical size is 13”-14”.

Tenkeyless: Does not have a keypad- having a grand-total of 87 keys.

75%: No gaps, no problem. This keyboard is more compact than the standard keyboard because the keys are right next to each other.

60%: This is the most compact keyboard ou of the bunch and only has 61 keys. If you don’t mind going without the Function row, number pad, or arrows, this keyboard will serve you well.

While most laptops have standard-sized keyboards, there are some models with a 75% keyboard, such as the Dell Inspiron 14z.

Parts of Your Laptop Keyboard

Upper Right: Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause/Break

Upper Left: Escape Key, allows you to stop an action, exit a program, or screen

Top Row: Function Keys, performs different functions such as adjusting screen brightness or raising the volume

Center: Alphanumeric keys, the main characters of a keyboard

Lower Left: Ctrl, Alt, Shift

Lower Right: Arrow Keys

Furthest Right: Numeric Keypad

The keys can also be categorized into three other categories

Inputting symbols: Letters, numbers, and punctuation

Mechanical controls: Tab, shift, and backspace

Additional functions: F1 – F12, control, delete, escape, insert

How to Tell if Your Laptop Has a Broken Keyboard

Over time, you may discover that your laptop’s keyboard no longer works the way it used to. But why?

Physical Flaws- When keycaps begin to fall off, melted, dented, missing keycaps, etc.

Unresponsive- If your keyboard does not function at all, you need a repair. The issue could also be caused by the laptop’s motherboard.

Dust and debris build-up- If you eat or drink over your keyboard, there is a greater chance of damage. Crumbs, dust, and accidental spills make for a great disaster when it comes to your laptop.

How to Fix Your Broken Laptop Keyboard

If your laptop seems to be a done deal because it has a broken keyboard, you can still save it!

It is not recommended that you repair your keyboard yourself because they are often complex and can result in further damage. It would be more efficient for you to leave all the work to iFixYouri’s expert technicians. Your laptop keyboard will perform as it should once again in no time!
