Editor’s update, September 20, 2026: This post preserves our 2012 interview announcement. The rice advice in the original text below is outdated and should not be followed. Apple advises against putting a wet iPhone in rice because particles can damage it. Disconnect charging cables, leave the device in a dry place with airflow, and follow the guidance for your model. For current guidance, read our water-damaged smartphone tips. Repair and data recovery cannot be guaranteed.
Original 2012 announcement
Recently our friends over at NPR on a segmant called how to do any gave us a call asking us what we would recommend to do if you suffer from iphone water damage. Well, in a nutshell, take your device and stick it in a bag of rice and let it sit in there for about 2 days.
It was pretty fun. We chatted with the hosts of “How to do everything” for a while and wanted to say a quick thanks!
