3 Potential Fixes for iPhone Issues

iPhone issuesIf you are having iPhone issues, you are not alone. These popular devices are certainly not bullet proof, and they can act up from time to time. One of the simplest issues many run into is the phone not turning on. If your iPhone will not turn on, you might believe that it is broken and you will have to get a new one. This could be the case, but certainly is not always true.

Here are 3 potential fixes:

1) Restart it

This might seem obvious, but if the iPhone is not turning on then the first thing you should do is just make sure it is turned on. In order to verify this, you simply press the Hold button on the top right corner of the phone for a few seconds. If it turns on, your problem is over. Obviously, this is the best-case scenario, but it might do the trick for you.

Of course, in many instances the problem is more complex. If the above step does not work, then press the hold button and the home button simultaneously. Make sure to do this for a minimum of 10 seconds. In many instances, this will turn on the phone.

2) Use DFU Mode

Sometimes an iPhone will get to the silver logo and just keep restarting. If this is your problem, you have an issue with the booting system. For some people this happens after they update the operating system.

Fortunately, fixing this issue is not hard. All you have to do to stop this problem is put it in DFU Mode (Device Firmware Update) mode. Note: this is not the same as recovery mode – it is a lot more thorough.

To get to DFU mode, you first have to connect the iPhone with your computer. Since the phone is off, you will have to hold down the sleep/power button and home button simultaneously for 10 seconds. It needs to be precisely 10 seconds-otherwise the phone will enter recovery mode instead of DFU.

Once 10 seconds have gone by, let go of the sleep/power button, but continue holding the Home button. At this point, the Apple Logo will come up. However, make sure you keep holding the home button until after the recovery warnings come up.

Note: there is an easy way to tell if you are in DFU or recovery mode. All you have to do is look at the iPhone screen. Should it be black, then you know you are in DFU mode. However, if it is showing a cable connection with the iTunes icon, you are in recovery mode.

3) Proximity Sensor

Sometimes the proximity sensor has issues. This sensor is responsible for locking the phone when it is close to your face. If this sensor stops working, then the screen will not turn on.

This problem is not common, but it can happen. The way to fix the problem is to press the home and hold button as before, in order to restart the system. This generally fixes the problem.

Conclusion

If after trying all the methods listed above your iPhone still doesn’t start, then it might have bigger problems than anticipated. At that point, it would be advisable to either ship or take your phone to an iPhone repair store for checkup. There are several stores but none of them can compare to ifixyouri.com.

iDiagnose – Part 4 – iPhone Screen Repair – What repair do you really need?

You’re walking down the sidewalk and you reach in your pocket to pull out your iPhone that is ringing. It slips out of your hand and SMASH! It hits the concrete, hard.

This is an all too common scenario that we see happen every day. Sometimes it’s just the iPhone glass that needs to be repaired, sometimes it’s the glass and LCD, and yet sometimes it’s just the LCD. To some, this question can be answered with no hesitation, yet to others, this sounds like a trick question.

First thing to determine is what type of iPhone Repair you’ll need. iFixYouri specializes in iPhone 3g, iPhone 3Gs, and iPhone 4 Repair.

Determining what iPhone you have

Some characteristics to find before iPhone 3G repair:

  • Black or white back housing
  • 8 GB or 16 GB
  • Letters on the back(bottom half) are gray, flat paint
  • iPhone has no video recording

Some characteristics to find before iPhone 3Gs repair:

  • Black or white back housing
  • 16 GB or 32 GB
  • Letters on the back(bottom half) are chrome, mirror like paint
  • iPhone records video
  • iPhone has compass

Some characteristics to find before iPhone 4 repair:

  • Steel/Metal frame and buttons
  • Front facing camera
  • Back housing is made of glass

Once you’ve decided what model you have, you will need to determine what iPhone screen repair your broken iPhone needs.

Glass only – Cracked front face. May or may not respond to touch. Screen behind the glass still displays the iPhone home screen/features.

Glass and LCD – Cracked front face. Can not see what is displayed on the screen. Screen may be white, gray, or black. The screen may also show cracks or bleeding and distorted picture.

LCD only – Front glass still in tact. Phone seems to respond to touch. Screen display is white, gray, or black. It may also show cracks behind the glass, may be bleeding(looks like cracked gray lines), or show distored pictures.

All 3 of these problems are very common when dropping an iPhone. When this repair is complete, your iPhone will function exactly how it did from the factory. iFixYouri uses only the highest quality parts to ensure proper fit, feel, and function. We are so confident in our parts, that all glass repairs come with a 1 year warranty.

Tearing down the new iPhone 4 – an exclusive look on the inside

All the hype going on right now is about the new iPhone 4, all the great new features, and Apple raising the bar a notch to its competition.

We received our FULL, circuit board included, iPhone 4 quite early this morning and rather than playing with all the new features, we tore it down to its bare components. How it comes apart and gets put back together is determines the iPhone repair process and that’s what really excites us.

First thing we noticed is how solid it felt. It feels heavier, and definitely more durable (feels is the key word here).

Taking the back cover off reveals a battery, like most other phones on the market today. This battery actually comes out with ease. The iPhone 4 is manufactured in a way that is opposite of the 3G, and 3Gs, but similar to the original 2G iPhone. Let me explain what I mean here….

iPhone 2G/iPhone 4 – In the manufacturing process, the Glass is the first part that is assembled to the chassis/frame, followed by the internals, and last the battery then the back cover.

iPhone 3G/iPhone 3Gs – The back cover is the first part assembled, then battery followed by the internals. The glass is the last part that goes in.

With iPhone 4 Repair for screen damage, this makes the process a bit more difficult, time consuming, and costly as the iPhone needs to be completely torn down to change out the glass.

After removing the battery we moved on to other iPhone 4 parts, we removed the lower speaker, charging port, and gently removed the logic board. With the logic board removed, you have access to the cameras, power button, ear piece speaker, volume controls and all the screws that hold the screen in place. Once all the screws are removed, the glass has a bit of adhessive that holds the screen to the frame snuggly.

The frame is a piece to marvel at. The intricate design and how everything pieces together is quite amazing.

In addition to the manufacturing of the phone gearing back towards the ways of the original iPhone, Apple decided to go ahead and use a mass amount of new screws that we have not seen before. As if the tiny screws that were used before weren’t pain enough, now they threw in some washers that help in holding the glass in place.

The steel body, combined with the sleek glass on front and back, we’d say that Apple hit yet another home run with this one.

Repairs on this new phone should not be left to amateurs. The mass of new screws, connectors, odd shaped circuit board(to maximize real estate), make this a tricky repair. Any and all measures to prevent electrostatic discharge(ESD) should be taken when cracking this open. Our technicians are always grounded when working on phones, and are only permitted to work in ESD safe areas.

iPhone water damage repair – Can a phone be fixed after getting wet?

Here’s a real-life iPhone water damage scenario: Beautiful day, the sun is shining, the weather is great. Friends and family are over for a nice BBQ by the pool. Your buddy decides to shove you into the pool as a prank. You laugh until you realize…Ahhhh, your iPhone is in your pocket! You immediately jump out and begin to panic.

WHAT DO YOU DO?!

Here’s a little breakdown of the game-plan; EXACTLY what you should do. Remember, time is of the essence.

  1. If the phone is ON, TURN IT OFF! Just do it. Water and electricity combined are not what you want. Give them some time apart.
  2. DO NOT TURN IT BACK ON!
  3. Remove any case that you may have on it and remove the SIM card.
  4. Dry it with a towel, and shake out excess water.
  5. Place phone in a bag of silica gel beads, available at most hardware stores. If you don’t have any silica gel on hand, you can put it in dry rice while you go to the store.
  6. Visit our website and select the appropriate iPhone Water Damage Repair service for your generation of iPhone.

You may be saying, well, if I put the iPhone in a bag of silica, and it sucked up all the water, what is the point of sending it in for water damage repair?

When water gets inside a smartphone, even the tiniest amount, corrosion builds up…and quick. We have seen phones with the insides covered in corrosion in less than 24 hours after water exposure.

Our process cleans any kind of corrosion or oils that may have accumulated on the circuit board after it was introduced to water. Without a proper check and cleaning, your phone may work after drying out, but you may lose features one by one in the following days or weeks. Corrosion grows a bit like rust, where it spreads sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly.

If you bring a water damaged phone into Apple, they will gladly exchange it for you…for a steep price. With the exchange, you’ll lose all of your data, and the replacement they give you is a refurbished model, not a new one.

Don’t go through that hassle. Follow the steps and then send it off to iFixYouri as soon as possible. Remember…

  • Turn it OFF
  • Place it in a bag of silica gel or rice
  • Select your generation of iPhone on this page: iPhone Water Damage Repair
  • We’ll fix it, test it, and ship it right back!

We are able to revive iPhones from water damage with a high success rate. Included in the water damage repair process is the replacement of any parts that may have been damaged in the spill.

iDiagnose – Part 2 – iPhone Battery life is short lived

iDiagnose – Part 2 – The dreaded iPhone battery problem

You leave your iPhone to charge all night, you take it to work, and it is dead by noon. Does your battery not last? Does it not run like the energizer bunny and just fade out immediately after you gave it a full charge? Diagnosing a faulty battery can be a real pain.

You’re in luck, well, not for the reason that you have a dead battery, but that iFixYouri can help you figure out what is really going on with your precious iPhone!

Problems with the battery come from:

  1. Poor conditioning of the battery
  2. Using a cheap charger that allows overcharging
  3. Its’ lifespan(usually about 2 years) has run out
  4. Water damage
  5. Cheap battery

Symptoms of a bad iPhone battery:

  1. Will not charge
  2. Barely holds charge
  3. Phone does erratic things like turn off and restart, display some funky lines on the screen.
  4. Says it has a charge, but in all actuality, it does not.
  5. No response from any plug, press of a power button, or anything for that matter. Just a dark, black, empty screen.

DIY Repair Difficulty – 4/10 – Medium

You must take your time when doing an iPhone Battery repair. You’re going to have to take the glass out, disconnect all the cables on the inside, and remove the motherboard just to get to the battery. You’re going to want to take precautions when doing this repair, taking electrostatic-discharge(ESD) into consideration and making sure you are grounded. We have seen cases where ESD has fried boards and rendered iPhones useless.

High quality iPhone Parts should always be used when repairing a broken iPhone. A dead battery holds true to this as well. We sell and use only the longest lasting, extended life batteries that are available on the market.

Turnaround time on iPhone Battery Repair – Same day

iDiagnose – Part 1 – The faulty home button

You press and press and press, yet nothing happens, or maybe sometimes you get it to respond. Pressing it harder isn’t always the best idea since you risk breaking other feature with increased pressure. Home button failure is a very common issue with all models of iPhones, new and old. It gets frustrating, and worst of all, you have a hard time justifying to send it off to an iPhone repair service for ‘just the home button’ since everything else is working.

A full functioning home button is a key factor to the amount of joy you have using when using your iPhone. There is a direct correlation between happiness and how well your iPhone is working. Statistics show that during the rather short lived life of your iPhone home button, it will have been clicked on average, 64 times a day, or 23360 times a year, or 46720 in its’ bound to AT&T ‘contract life.’

Right now you’re saying really? How the h*@l did they get that statistic. We didn’t. And honestly, we’re not 100% sure how many times it is clicked, but it is a lot, that’s for sure!

Problems with the home button come from:

  1. The button itself is shot from repetitive pressing/usage
  2. The prongs under the frame wore out, got corroded, or broke
  3. Water got in the crack between the glass and button
  4. The dock connector failed – Dock connector? What does the home button have anything to do with the dock connector? On the bottom side of the frame that holds the iPhone glass, there are some metal contacts that touch the top of the dock connector, that send the signal when pressed to the motherboard(the brain) of the iPhone. If the dock connector fails, no more functioning home button
  5. Lastly the rarest – The connector on the the motherboard shorted leaving this function permanently inoperable.

Of these 5, the worn out button(#1) covers about 3 out of 5 home button failures.

DIY Repair Difficulty – 8/10 – Very difficult

If you’re the type to do-it-yourself, the iPhone 3G home button repair and the iPhone 3Gs home button repair is quite a tough repair. It requires seperating the glass from the frame….here comes the tough part…without damaging the glass or scratching the back side. If the glass is in good condition, you’re in for a good challenge. Prime time to change the glass, is if your glass is already cracked and you’re planning on either using an iPhone Repair Service or purchasing iPhone Parts to DIY.
