iPhone 4 Breaks in Drop Test, Not Just Parts – VIDEO

(Last Updated On: )

About a week ago a few of the techs and I decided to drop test an iPhone 4 to test screen damage resistance (we had a full iPhone, minus the motherboard). This test came under scrutiny since there was no ‘video’ proof and the iPhone parts used were questioned. We did not use any hammers, ice picks, or axes to break it. Just gravity. We did not throw it or spike it.

We told everyone that once we have a full iPhone, functioning, we’d be posting a video of us drop testing. The test was completed on a sunny afternoon in Florida, behind our repair facility. The area where it was dropped was free of pebbles and/or small rocks. It was a flat surface out in our parking lot. The height it was performed at, was about the level where you would be holding the phone out in front of you.

Well, the day has come, we have a complete working iPhone, straight from Apple, in our hands today. We disassembled it, took some pictures, reassembled it, showed that it works and that it is a functioning iPhone in the video. This video is completely unedited. What you are about to see is heart breaking. Our next step will be to perform and iPhone repair to show how we can clean up a broken iPhone 4 screen when suffering glass damage.

****WARNING – THE VIDEO YOU ARE ABOUT TO VIEW CONTAINS SOME GRAPHIC SCENES. IT IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART*****

  1. Well, I guess I have to eat my words. The iPhone’s screen still sucks balls. I can’t believe you guys broke it!!!!! I didn’t think you could even get one yet, but my buddy got his Wednesday(today) too. Well, I guess all us that made comments on your other test, have to eat our words. I bow down to you guys. iFixYouri rocks! I will send you mine when I break it, which will probably happen in a month or so. Keep up the good work.

  2. Great job guys. I wonder how well that bumper they sell would actually protect it from these drops. Can you guys test that?

  3. Why!!!!! Don’t do that!!!! This hurts a lot!!!!
I won’t get my iPhone 4 until 2 weeks from today 🙁 and you just destroyed this one :(:(

  6. I’m from Brazil. Here the iPhone 4 will take a long, although a test of endurance not believe you broke the iPhone.Bom if he were made to be thrown on the floor would have written it in caixa.Mas anyway the device is not as well as tough.

  14. So, in your opinion, based on durability, do you think it’s worth it to get the iphone 4 or the iphone 3Gs? or do they both have the same durability when it comes to dropping?

  16. So any news when the Iphone 4 with a “bumper” drop test, will be posted? Thats the only thing I’m waiting for before I decided wheter to buy one. And just in case i buy one and I drop it, around how much would it cost to have you guys fix it?

  17. Remind me never to fly in a helicopter again!
Looking forward to the drop test with the bumper.

  18. Whats the cost to repair? Dropped mine getting out of the car and shattered the glass.

  19. I must sadly say I broke my iphone the day after it came out. My screen is shattered. I am actually a bit pissed at myself as well as apple. I was told by the salesman at apple that this screen is strong… ” this screen is mad of helicopter glass you can drop it from 6 feet and it wont break” blah blah. I took it out of my pocket it being so thin it slipped out of my hand. One time it fell then it dropped and the unthinkable happened. now is there a way to fix it? I think apple should fix it. I had my 3 g since the first day. It went through hell and it never even had a scratch on the screen. Help please to get it fixed

  24. I am very excited to see your result of the drop test with a apple bumper on, both to see if glass will be scratch free but also not crack. I Dropped my iphone 4 with bumper on granite tiles the other day, they were flat tiles so no scratch as I guess the bumper clears off the glass by 1-2 mm. But, there where a scratch on the metal when taking the bumper off, perhaps of the hard plastic hitting it hard. Would be interesting to see how many drops it taked before it goes dead. Let me know what you guys find out:) It made a hell of a noise when dropped mine, I an surprised they did not have silicone lining inside, not just a hard plastic. Does not really absorb so much I feel.

  25. My husband’s phone fell out of his pocket while sitting from at most 1.5 ft onto concrete and the front glass cracked. He tried buying a bumper or case for it prior to the fall but they were sold out in many stores. It would be nice to see a bumper test as I’m looking forward to buying the white phone.

  26. I was walking down the street about 20 mins ago when my phone fell out of my hip holster and my back panel is completely shattered how much does it cost to get fixed I need it done asap

  27. My Iphone just fell out of my pocket as I was getting out of my car. probably it fell from 1.5 f and the glass shattered EVEN with the stupid apple bumper on. Tomorrow I’m going to the Apple Store to get it fixed so probably it will cost me money. I hate this fragile iPhone 4 glass.

  31. Hey, Chris wrote they would do a bumper drop test when you guys get one. Are they sold out in the US? I can in that case send you one from Europe as they have plenty here so you do one test.

  32. Mines broken on the back it’s still working but little pieces of glass keep sticking to my hand I thought they were supposed to be durable

  33. Funny….I dropped mine on pavement just days after I bought it and thought that I was screwed. A truly thorough inspection didn’t even render a single solitary scratch. I hope I stay that lucky.

  34. My husband just shattered the face of his iPhone. I have one & I’m scared mines is next! I love my phone but think this is a pretty sad display of strength…I mean this was a huge selling point for us. This is the first time we have owned the iPhone and before this incident I pretty much was sold on iPhone 4ever. Now I’m not so sure.
